Each year our kids are treated to an end of the year movie. Our school sits behind a movie cinema. So usually we troop over, watch the movie, and then troop back. The movie theater provided popcorn and soda for each kid. It cost the kids $3. The PTA would kick in the remainder of the cost. Which, as it turns out, was about $2,000. Wow! Anyway, we know our families really struggle, even with the $3. And we disbanded our PTA since it was virtually non-existent. So this year we did a movie at the school - in the gymnasium. And let me tell you, it was quite a swanky event. Our staff pitched in and converted the gym into a movie theater. They hung black plastic between the cafeteria and gym to act as a light barrier. We rented a popcorn machine. Everyone brought candy to make treat bags for the kids. Pepsi donated soda. We laid rope lights around the perimeter of the gym to provide some light for those who might have to visit the bathroom. We decided to use part of the $2,000 to buy and install a wall-mounted, roll-up movie screen. Waaay cool (and we can use it for all sorts of things, including next year's movie.) I set up one of our data carts that has a computer, projector and a really nice speaker set. Several staff members dressed up as movie characters to greet the kids as they entered the "theater". Our janitor was running around in a King Kong outfit. It was incredible. The kids had a blast. It simply amazes me how hard the staff works to give our kids a good time.
